A leader should know how to manage failure

A leader should know how to manage failure.
(Former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam at Wharton India Economic forum , Philadelphia , March 22,2008 )

Question: Could you give an example, from your own experience, of how leaders should manage failure?

Kalam: Let me tell you about my experience. In 1973 I became the project director of India 's satellite launch vehicle program, commonly called the SLV-3. Our goal was to put India 's 'Rohini' satellite into orbit by 1980. I was given funds and human resources -- but was told clearly that by 1980 we had to launch the satellite into space. Thousands of people worked together in scientific and technical teams towards that goal.

By 1979 -- I think the month was August -- we thought we were ready. As the project director, I went to the control center for the launch. At four minutes before the satellite launch, the computer began to go through the checklist of items that needed to be checked. One minute later, the computer program put the launch on hold; the display showed that some control components were not in order. My experts -- I had four or five of them with me -- told me not to worry; they had done their calculations and there was enough reserve fuel. So I bypassed the computer, switched to manual mode, and launched the rocket. In the first stage, everything worked fine. In the second stage, a problem developed. Instead of the satellite going into orbit, the whole rocket system plunged into the Bay of Bengal . It was a big failure.
That day, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, Prof. Satish D hawan, had called a press conference. The launch was at 7:00 am , and the press conference -- where journalists from around the world were present -- was at 7:45 am at ISRO's satellite launch range in Sriharikota [in Andhra Pradesh in southern India ]. Prof. Dhawan, the leader of the organization, conducted the press conference himself. He took responsibility for the failure -- he said that the team had worked very hard, but that it needed more technological support. He assured the media that in another year, the team would definitely succeed.. Now, I was the project director, and it was my failure, but instead, he took responsibility for the failure as chairman of the organization.

The next year, in July 1980, we tried again to launch the satellite -- and this time we succeeded. The whole nation was jubilant. Again, there was a press conference. Prof. Dhawan called me aside and told me, 'You conduct the press conference today.'

I learned a very important lesson that day. When failure occurred, the leader of the organization owned that failure. When success came, he gave it to his team. The best management lesson I have learned did not come to me from reading a book; it came from that experience.

CARRY A LITTLE HONEY...

Carry a little honey as you go along life's way.
Bring a touch of sunshine into
someone's life today.
There's good you can do for someone if you will stay alert,
Someone who may be discouraged
despondent or hurt.
It doesn't take a millionaire to
bring somebody cheer
Sometimes a friendly smile can,
take away a tear
Show someone you love them,
Pat them on the back
You'll find that it is easy once you get the knack.
Tell your friends you love them,
let your appreciation show
Your kind words may lift them more than you can ever know
Let your family know they're special to you every day
Show them kindness and affection in all you do or say.
Take time to thank others for
the good things they do
It will uplift them and also lift you
Tt won't take much time and it,
won't cost much money
Your life will be better if you carry a little honey.

KEEP BELIEVING IN YOURSELF...

There May Be Days When You Get Up,

In The Morning And Things Aren't The,
Way You Has Hoped They Would Be

That's When You Have Tell Yourself

That Will Get Better.

There Are Times When People Disappoint,

You And Let You Down

But Those Are The Time When You Must

Remind Yourself To Trust Your Own

Judgments And Opinions

To Keep Your Life Focused On Believing In

Yourself And All That You Are Capable Of

There Will Be Challenges To Face And

Changes To Make In Your Life

And It Is Up To You To Accept Them

Constantly Keep Yourself Headed In The Right Direction For You

It May Not Be Easy At Times

But In Those Time Of Struggle
You Will Find A Stronger Sense Of Who You Are.

So When The Days Come That Are Filled

With Frustration And Unexpected Responsibilites
Remember To Believe In Yourself

And All You Want Your Life To Be
Because The Challenges And Will Only Help You
To Find The Goals That You Know Are Meant To Come True For You.

Winners take chances like everyone else, they fear failing, but they refuse to let fear control them.
Winners don't give up. When life gets rough, they hang in until the going gets better.
Winners are flexible. They realize there is more than one way and are willing to try others.
Winners know they are not perfect. They respect their weaknesses while making the most of their strengths.
Winners fall but they don't stay down. They stubbornly refuse to let a fall keep them from climbing.
Winners don't blame fate for their failures, nor luck for their successes.Winners accept responsibility for their lives.
Winners are positive thinkers who see good in all things. From the ordinary, they make the extraordinary.
Winners believe in the path they have chosen even when it is hard, even when others can't see where they are going.
Winners are patient. They know a goal is only worthy as the effort that is required to achieve it.
Winners are people that believe in themselves. They make this world a better place to be.

The smiling crippled girl ...

The extraordinary power of the human spirit is shown at its mightiest by this one little girl.

Qian Hong Yan lost her legs in an accident.
Her family in China are poor and couldn't afford prosthetic legs, so she uses a basketball to help her move.

Qian uses two wooden props to drag herself, and never complains, even though she has worn through six basketballs.

She attends her class

She always smiles
Always energetic

Always cheerful

always positive
With financial help she is now able to afford a pair of prosthetic legs.

This brave girl teaches us a lesson - Be grateful with what you have.
Let adversities not affect your morale and spirit; keep striving for life is full of ups and downs.
It is your metal strength that will carry you through tough times.

A Word to Teachers by Abraham Lincoln (Contributed by: Priya)

A letter written by Abraham Lincoln to the Headmaster of a school in which his son was studying.

It contains an advice, which is still relevant today for executives, workers, teachers, parents and students.

A WORD TO TEACHERS :

"He will have to learn, I know, that all men are not just and are not true. But teach him if you can the wonder of books... but also give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun and flowers on a green hillside.

In school, teach him it is far more honorable to fall than to cheat... Teach to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone tells him he is wrong.

Teach him to be gentle with gentlepeople and tough with the tough. Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone getting on the bandwagon...

Teach him to listen to all men; but teach him also to filter all he hears on a screen of truth, and take only the good that comes through.

Teach him, if you can how to laugh when he is sad... Teach him there is no shame in tears.

Teach him to scoff at cynics and to be aware of too much sweetness.

Teach him to sell his brawn and brain to highest bidders, but never to put a price on his heart and soul. Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob... and stand and fight if thinks he is right.

Treat him gently, but do not cuddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel. Let him have the courage to be impatient. Let him have the patience to be brave.

Teach him always to have sublime faith in himself, because then he will have faith in humankind.

This is a big order, but see what you can do. He is such a fine little fellow my son!

- Abraham Lincoln"

George Carlin - Paradox; submitted by Sudhir Warrier

May the impact of the profound truths written by George Carlin, be influential in opening our eyes and making changes in our day to day living.

This is a master piece.... If you have not read it take the time to read it now. If you have read it do take time to read it again!

GEORGE CARLIN (He recently died)

Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent...and so very appropriate....
A Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete....

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side..

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent....

Remember, to say, 'I love you' to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

George Carlin

Precious Life (Contributed by Shri CV Ramachandran)

Even though death is imminent and we have to depart from the earth leaving behind our kith & kin, wealth and what not; as is seen today, majority of the people are greedy for acquiring umpteen amount of wealth vis-a-vis power and in the process they are madly running here and there without giving importance to exercise, timely intake, proper rest etc., not to speak of religious rituals and parental care. With the quality and facilities in life improving day by day, they try and identify with other people who are better off, and imitate them. In the process, they try and live out what we call the ego-ideal without caring for the limited sources that may be at their disposal. By the time they realize what they are doing, it will be too late. So, ironically if their life is compared to “mushrooms” there is nothing wrong in it.

Majority of young people of this jet-age days want to start off with major jumps in life with extravagant better-halves. They expect to achieve everything overnight for which they are prepared to even change colour like chameleon, without realizing that a lot of hard work goes into those overnight successes.

As illustrated in Vedas, “Maya” is a huge saw and lust, anger, greed, pride, jealousy, hatred, egoism etc. are the teeth of this big saw. As per the existing state of affairs, a higher percentage of people are caught up in the teeth of this saw due to one reason or the other and ultimately are crushed. However, a meagre percentage who are endowed with purity, sacrificing tendency, love and devotion to duty are not hurt instead escape through divine grace. Ultimately their aim in life ought to be peace with painless departure, of course leaving behind many to weep and remember their good deeds for a longer period.

So our prayer should be - Oh God, take away the wealth of those who exploit others, without sharing it with those who really toil to earn! Oh Lord Almighty bestow on us the privilege of enjoying the wealth earned by honest and hard labour during our limited period of life.

Your Weakness = Your Strength

This is a story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move. "Sensei," the boy finally said,
"Shouldn't I be learning more moves?"

"This is the only move you know, but this is the only
move you'll ever need to know," the Sensei replied.
Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher,
the boy kept training.

Several months later, the Sensei took the boy to his
first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily
won his first two matches. The third match proved
to be more difficult, but after some time, his
opponent became impatient and charged; the
boy deftly used his one move to win the match.
Still amazed by his success, the boy was now
in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and
more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared
to be over matched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about
to stop the match when the Sensei intervened.
"No," the Sensei insisted, "Let him continue."

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made
a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the
boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the
match and the tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and Sensei reviewed
every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind. "Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?" "You won for two reasons," the Sensei answered. "First, you've almost mastered one of the
most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the
only known defence for that move is for your opponent
to grab your left arm."

The boy's greatest weakness had become his greatest strength..

Many of the things seem how we view at them.

Everything is beautiful in life and not everyone feels that because of difference in the viewer and not in the thing.

"An optimist looks at the beautiful rose and a Pessimist looks at the thorns beneath the rose."
Enjoy this beautiful day.

Quote of the day : What most counts is not to live, but to live in a right way.

"What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it."

This quote is a great quote to start each and every day.

Each year has 365 days in it, and you can use them wisely, or you can waste them. The amazing thing about this year is that every one of us has one thing in common: we all have 365 days.

The difference between us is how we use our days. Successful people understand the quote and live each day knowing they will never have it again.

They do what needs to be done, whether they like it or not.

They have focus, and know what it is they want to accomplish. And, most importantly, they take action and do it.

So many people make wishes, and that is all they do - wish.

They never take action; they think and talk about it, start a few things but not finish anything.

A saying that is worthy to note: "Never confuse motion with action".

Do not waste your days by:

· Focusing on yesterdays' failures - it is only a failure if you stop trying, and if you learned nothing from it.

· Anxiety over today's problems - if you can fix the problem do so, if not move on.

. Do not waste your day worrying about that which you have no control over.

· Worrying about tomorrow's uncertainty - remember it is today that you are living, not tomorrow.

. And, if you do the things that need to be done today, tomorrow will take care of itself.

· Allowing procrastination to dominate your day - procrastination truly is the thief of time.

· Giving up - there is a saying, "persistence prevails when all else fails."

Before you start each day, say the quote out loud: "What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it."

Is what you are going to do today worth a day of your life?
